TJHSHPS 2009Annual Meeting

March 4, 2009 at Jacala Restaurant

The Spellmans entered the doors for Jefferson for their first day of class together
The Class of 1935 was represented by Mr. and Mrs. Andy and Hazel Spellman, a couple who entered the doors of Jefferson as freshman on the first day it was open.

The Pianata family had several members in attendance.

Alma Aguirre presented Jefferson as a work of art through an exploration of the life of Hannibal Pianta, building pioneer and artist. Other examples of his work can be seen ay both the Majestic and Empire theaters, as well as other buildings in San Antonio and Texas.

Tom Battersby and member of Hannibal Piant's family
Tom Battersby, pictured here with Liz Pianta, a member of Hannibal Pianta's family, is a well-known restorer of Pianta's work. He and his family made a surprise appearance at the meeting when he saw his name projected on the screen during Alma Aguirre's presentation. Visit his website to see his restoration and original work.

Susan Toomey Frost, Class of 1958, offered her expertise in decorative tiles with a presentation about the Jefferson tiles that are a part her new book due out in September 2009. The book entitled, Colors in Clay, includes six pages of images and discussion about some of the tiles that adorn our school.

She showed the assembled group original drawings that eventually became the tiles on the "Pan American Table," which is now in the school library. Susan's website is www.susanfrost.org. A visit will be well worth your time.

Architect Adam Bush and his wife
Adam Bush of Overland Partners Architects, also a member of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA), announced to Annual Meeting attendees that the San Antonio Chapter of the AIA was awarding their
25-year Building Award
to Thomas Jefferson High School.

The 25-year Building Award is given to structures that "have stood the test of time." says Express-News reporter Jennifer Hiller (on mySA news - mySA.com) in her November 6, 2008 article entitled, "Architect group honors design work." "The award must be given to a building that was designed by a local AIA member prior to 1982." 1932 and Adams and Adams qualify the school easily. The article goes on to say that "readers of the San Antonio Express-News were invited to cast their own people's choice vote for the 25-year award on  mySA.com, and [they] chose Jefferson High School as their favorite."

Society Webmaster posted events as they happened
Board member and Society Webmaster, Don Moore, continued his lifelong disdain for homework and posted events onto TJHPS.ORG as they happened.

November 2008

Dedication of the Thomas Jefferson High School Wall of Fame.

October 2008
